The San Francisco 49ers have a chance to play with their starting quarterback and left tackle Sunday, but the team is not confirming that they will be available for Week 3.

SANTA CLARA (California) – Coach Kyle Shanahan of the San Francisco 49ers has learned not to put too much faith in what he’s told on game days, whether the news is good or bad, given his team’s apparently never-ending string of injuries.

Shanahan likes to wait until the following day for further testing, which is why he breathed a sigh of relief Monday when he learned that quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo’s right calf and left tackle Trent Williams’ right shoulder would not be long-term injuries.

Garoppolo and Williams will be assessed throughout the week, according to Shanahan, and both have a chance to play Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals.

“At the very least, we know it’s nothing too severe in terms of long-term consequences,” Shanahan added. “I believe Trent and I received somewhat better news than Jimmy, but we’ll have to wait and see how Jimmy responds over the next two days. However, both of these were much better news today than the sensation we had the night before.”

A deeper examination of Garoppolo showed a bruised calf, which may take some time to recover but could possibly be resolved in a matter of days, allowing him to start against the Cardinals.

Shanahan said, “It does imply he has a shot.” “It didn’t turn out to be as terrible as we had feared. He’s in a lot of discomfort and is still painful. If it’s getting better by the time he comes in on Wednesday, he’ll have a decent shot. It will most likely take a little longer if it hasn’t improved by Wednesday.”

For Williams, the news was even better. While Shanahan was vague on the nature of Williams’ shoulder issue, he did remark that the fluid in his shoulder has to be cleared out. Despite this, he believes Williams will be OK for Arizona.

“Considering what we were concerned about originally, it was certainly some of the greatest news we received,” Shanahan said. “There’s some fluid in there and things, so there are some problems, but that’s something he can recover from here before Sunday,” says the doctor.

If neither Garoppolo nor Williams are ready to play on Sunday, they will both be available for the Niners’ next game, which would be two weeks after their Week 6 bye on Oct. 24.

While Shanahan was optimistic about both players, he did say that Garoppolo’s status was a little more in doubt than Williams’. That means Trey Lance, who filled in for Garoppolo in the second half of Sunday’s 28-21 defeat to the Seattle Seahawks, may still get his first NFL start.

Garoppolo said that the injury occurred during San Francisco’s opening offensive series, and that quarterback believes a Seahawks defender stepped on his calf. Garoppolo battled through the injury and got it to halftime before handing the ball over to Lance.

In Garoppolo’s absence, Lance completed 9-of-18 passes for 157 yards and two touchdowns while also rushing seven times for 41 yards.

Shanahan admitted on Monday that the Niners would have to start developing a game plan that at least includes the potential of Lance starting in Arizona because to the uncertainty surrounding Garoppolo’s health.

“You want to tell him every week to go into it like he’s the starting quarterback,” Shanahan said. “This is the first week in which he has a real opportunity to do so on the opening play. So he’ll have to take it that way, learn from his mistakes from last night, and be ready to play on Wednesday.”

The 49ers will be without kicker Robbie Gould for three to five weeks due to an injury. Gould has a groin injury and was unable to participate in the defeat to Seattle. On Tuesday, the 49ers are scheduled to test out kickers and sign one while deciding whether or not to place Gould on injured reserve.

George Kittle, who played through his own calf issue against the Seahawks last week after missing two sessions, will take a similar approach in practice this week. Kittle will be monitored throughout the week, according to Shanahan, with the Niners hoping to have him ready against the Cardinals.

The jimmy garoppolo height is a question that many people are asking. Jimmy Garoppolo has been playing for the San Francisco 49ers since he was traded from the New England Patriots.
