The Denver Broncos announced on Tuesday that former Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Avery Williamson has been added to their practice squad. The move comes only hours after it was revealed that Williamson had a workout with the Broncos, five days before the two teams are set to face off at Heinz Field. Josey Jewell (torn pectoral) is gone for the season, while Jonas Griffith (hamstring) is on injured reserve, so Denver needs depth at the position.
Last season, the Steelers acquired Avery Williamson via a trade.
Williamson, now 29, last played for the Steelers in a playoff loss to the Cleveland Browns in January 2021. On Nov. 1, 2020, he was acquired in a trade with the New York Jets in exchange for Pittsburgh’s fifth-round draft selection in 2022, as well as a 2022 seventh-round pick from New York.
Following Devin Bush Jr.’s ruptured ACL in October 2020, as well as a back ailment to then-Steelers linebacker Ulysees Gilbert III, the Steelers felt forced to make the trade.
According to Pro Football Reference, Williamson was a half-season temporary solution for the Steelers, playing in eight regular-season games and starting four of them (PFR). He has 52 total tackles (37 solo), one sack, two quarterback hits, and three tackles for loss throughout his career.
Those statistics are approximately in line with what Williamson contributed to the Jets — and, before that, the Tennessee Titans — during his time as a starter for both clubs.
The Steelers, on the other hand, made no attempt to re-sign the former Kentucky Wildcat, who was drafted in the fifth round of the 2014 NFL Draft by the Titans.
The Steelers acquired another another starting linebacker this season.
But it doesn’t mean the club was satisfied with Bush and Robert ‘Front of the Plane’ Spillane as the starting inside linebackers in 2021.
Joe Schobert, a former Jacksonville Jaguars linebacker, was purchased by the Steelers in mid-August this year for a sixth-round selection in the 2022 NFL Draft. The decision comes less than a month after veteran Steelers linebacker Vince Williams announced his retirement on the eve of training camp.
Schobert has started all four games this season, accumulating 29 total tackles (17 solo) and three passes defensed, according to PFR.

Sexton, dubbed “Cheddar Bob,” was signed by the Steelers in late March after impressing at Michigan State’s 2021 Pro Day.
Sexton seemed to have a shot to make Pittsburgh’s 53-man roster as a kick return specialist until he muffed two punts in the team’s final preseason game. On Aug. 28, 2021, he was released and has since had tryouts with numerous clubs, including the Cleveland Browns and Chicago Bears.
