The word “metaverse” is a term that conjures up images of the future, but it has been around for decades. What exactly does metaverse mean? Is it just another buzzword to be filed away with all the other new-age terms and phrases like VR and AI?

The term “metaverse” has been around for over a decade. Here are some of the most interesting examples of metaverses since 2003, with five being the best so far.

The “raph koster metaverse” is a phrase that Raph Koster has been saying for some time now. It’s not going to stop anytime soon.

Despite my want to play about in whatever bizarre, massive sandbox Raph Koster and Playable Worlds are creating, I now shudder everytime I hear the term “metaverse.” It’s not entirely Koster’s fault; it’s simply a result of months of watching megacorp PR and third-rate crypto grifters utilize and misuse the term, typically in a manner that makes no sense but generates a few headlines, all of which clog up my email on a regular basis.

Listening to someone who is dead serious about it and understands what he’s talking about, on the other hand, helps my head jitter a little less, and that’s exactly what’s on offer this morning. Koster joined Jon Radoff on the Building the Metaverse vidcast to discuss anything from virtual world economics and identity to the metaverse itself.

At the commencement of the program, Koster states, “The way I like to think about’metaverse’ is the moment at which enough connections have been established between these worlds that began as fantasy realms – they started as quite segmented, isolated entities.” “However, as we increase the [number] of connections to the real world, as well as the amount of replicated information (more mirroring, more stuff flowing in and out, whether it be money, information, or whatever it is), there comes a point – and we’re already approaching it – where the data in those mirrors matters to the real world as much as anything in the real world does.”

It’s an 80-minute episode that’s been split into sections so you can skip through the things a core MMORPG player has probably previously heard Koster speak about to get to the current metaverse.
