Command and Conquer is a series of real-time strategy video games that have been developed by Westwood Studios since 1995. The franchise has sold more than 100 million copies worldwide, with Command & Conquer Tiberian Sun being the best selling title in 2001 after having sold 10 million units within four months.
Command and Conquer’s future might depend on the success of the next game. The new game is slated for release in 2021, but it remains to be seen whether or not C&C will ever return to its glory days.
Electronic Arts’ Command and Conquer Remastered Collection was a critical and financial success, rekindling nostalgia while bringing the series’ renowned gameplay back with improved aesthetics.
Fans have already expressed their desire for additional remasters and perhaps a new game in the Command and Conquer series, so the existence of a new entry at some time in the future may be contingent on the success of Age of Empires 4.
Producer Jim Vessella stated in an interview with the website Eurogamer that “Command and Conquer Remastered Collection has put [the franchise] in the best momentum position we could be, given everything the franchise has gone through over the last 10 years,” adding that he “would love to be able to do more with C&C.”
The Future of Command and Conquer
“Age of Empires 4 is being developed by Relic in collaboration with Microsoft, which is something I’m quite interested in. And it is one of those projects – a significant investment, a very experienced crew, a long-standing brand – and I’m really interested to see how it turns out. If it goes well, it will be a significant data point for the genre. As a result, we’ll be able to assess the genre’s performance. Alternatively, vice versa. So that’s the team I’m pulling for! “, he said.
The necessity for such a boost stems not just from the RTS genre’s present status – which doesn’t exactly place it in the forefront – but also from the fact that a full-fledged entry in the CnC series – on par with Tiberium Wars or Red Alert 3 – would need a significant expenditure.
Furthermore, Vessella described the tools necessary to create such a game as “very difficult” and “extremely hard to reuse anything from other genres,” referring to how the usage of the Frostbite engine in Generals 2 led to the game’s final demise.
It’s unclear how Relic Entertainment will manage the highly anticipated Age of Empires 4, especially as the company is still reeling from the failure of Dawn of War 3 to capture the interest of fans in the same manner that its predecessors did.
Even if a new Command & Conquer game takes a long time to emerge, a remake of Tiberian Sun and Red Alert 2 that is as well-executed as 2020’s Remastered Collection would be just as welcome.
