So come on in and take a closer look at volleyball: the sport of champions!

The history of volleyball – who invented it

Volleyball originated in the United States in 1895. It was created by William G. Morgan, a physical education teacher at the YMCA in Holyoke, Massachusetts. Morgan’s goal was to create a game that would be suitable for indoor play and that would be less strenuous than basketball. He borrowed elements from other sports such as tennis and handball, and the result was a game that quickly became popular among both men and women.

How to play the game – a step-by-step guide

Volleyball is a game played by two teams of six players. The object of the game is to score points by grounding the ball on the other team’s court, or by forcing the other team to make errors.

  • The game is played on a court measuring 18 meters by 9 meters. Each team must stay within its own half of the court.
  • The game begins with a coin toss. The team that wins the toss gets to choose whether to serve first or to receive first.
  • The players on each team line up behind their respective nets. The player who is serving stands behind the back line and throws the ball into the air. The ball must then be hit by the server over the net and into the other team’s court. The receiving team must then return the ball, again trying to hit it over the net and into the other team’s court.
  • Play continues in this manner until one team either grounds the ball on the other team’s court, or forces the other team to make an error, at which point the team scores a point. The first team to reach 25 points wins the set, and the first team to win two sets (out of a possible three) wins the match.

How to recieve a volleyball
