In the fall of 2006, a South Carolina high school teacher named Mary Ann Bales had a problem. Her students were always asking for extra help with their homework. They needed extra-credit assignments, extra-credit quizzes, and extra-credit tests. And they needed them right away.
2016 was a tumultuous year for politics. A lot of people were displeased with the results of the presidential election. They were also displeased with the results of the Brexit referendum, and of many other elections throughout the world. In short, a lot of people felt that the decisions made weren’t the ones that they wanted made.
The quarterback for the Houston Texans needs to be taken out of the running for the MVP award. His name is Tom Savage, and he has been given a huge, unnecessary amount of credit for the Texans’ success. It baffles me every time I hear him speak, because it is obvious that he doesn’t deserve all the credit.
Everyone wants what Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs have. Coach Matt Nagy of the Chicago Bears, on the other hand, may be following their template a bit too closely.
Fans worldwide can see Justin Fields’ brilliance pouring from his pores, as the rookie looks to be the NFL’s next great quarterback. Nagy, on the other hand, seems hell-bent on doing exactly what Kansas City did with Mahomes, which was to bench the star quarterback for the most of his first season.
Tight end Travis Kelce, Mahomes’ top teammate, reportedly said that his quarterback did not need to sit that first year. Regardless of what happened, he was going to be successful.
On the Chicago Bears, Justin Fields will most likely be seated behind Andy Dalton.
Fields was chosen as the No. 11 overall selection in the 2021 NFL Draft by the Chicago Bears, who parted ways with Mitchell Trubisky and acquired Andy Dalton in the same offseason.
Fields has wowed fans with his performance nearly every time he has on the field since then. In his first preseason game, he completed 14 of 20 passes for 142 yards and a score while also rushing for 33 yards and a touchdown on five attempts. In the second game, he completed 9-of-19 passes for 80 yards and 46 yards on four runs before completing seven of his ten pass attempts for 54 yards and a touchdown.
Dalton, on the other hand, didn’t play in the third game but did go 2-of-4 for 18 yards in the first before going 11-of-17 for 146 yards, one touchdown, and one interception in the next.
Overall, Dalton didn’t do much to distinguish himself from Fields, but Nagy, who was the offensive coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs during Patrick Mahomes’ first season in 2017, selected Dalton the Week 1 starting.
Nagy’s choice now raises the following question: Is it essential to sit in Fields?
Patrick Mahomes didn’t need to sit with the Chiefs, according to Travis Kelce.
In 2017, Alex Smith was the Chiefs’ starting quarterback and had a great year, passing for 4,042 yards, 26 touchdowns, and five interceptions. In the same year, Kansas City finished 10-6 and made the playoffs.
Mahomes, on the other hand, became the team’s starting quarterback in his second year, and he has since taken the league by storm. He’s earned a league MVP award, appeared in three AFC Title Games, two Super Bowls, and, of course, one championship.
So, as a rookie, did he have to sit behind Smith?
“I think I saw it from the beginning, his resolve, his ability to identify coverages early, feel confidence in what he’s seeing, throw a solid ball, and then obviously his ability to create plays when the play breaks down,” Travis Kelce said on The Rich Eisen Show on Aug. 26. “No one I’ve ever played with or seen on the field compares to that. So, although I’m a bit prejudiced in saying he didn’t need that year, I do believe it helped him prepare for the following season more than anything else.”
Kelce went on to say that although seeing Smith’s professionalism was helpful to Mahomes, the quarterback didn’t need that year on the bench.
He stated, “Patrick Mahomes has something about him that makes me believe he’ll find a way.”

So, what does Travis Kelce’s remark about Justin Fields mean for him? It doesn’t say anything explicitly, but it does suggest that the Chiefs’ decision to bench Patrick Mahomes may have been exaggerated. Mahomes is a unique player who, no matter what, will find a way to win.
Fields isn’t Mahomes, but based on what he displayed at Ohio State and what he’s done since joining the Bears, he seems to be unique. He seems to know what it takes to be successful and will likely be excellent regardless of whether he sits as a rookie or not.
What distinguishes Fields’ position from Mahomes’ is that the Chiefs were likely a stronger club in 2017 than the Bears will be in 2021. With Smith at the helm, Kansas City had a chance to make a splash, while Dalton’s Chicago may very well end the season around.500 for the third year in a row.
For the time being, Dalton seems to be the Bears’ starting quarterback. However, just because the Chiefs didn’t play Mahomes until the last regular-season game in 2017, Nagy shouldn’t be scared to utilize Fields. He’s the Bears’ quarterback of the future, with a greater potential than Dalton in 2021.

Travis Kelce claims that his father’s laziness has resulted in people mispronouncing his surname for years.
